 I started playing trombone in 1975, 6th grade school music and had the double good fortune
of a very solid school music program and parents willing to pay for lots of private instruction.
My 7th-8th grade band teacher, Alvin Bohms, made sure we knew the order of sharps and flat keys by rote.
He had us shuffle in place (‘march’) as we recited them to a metronome set at 60.
We didn’t like it but we didn’t run away either. Mr. Bohms played his saxophone for us a few times;
I remember thinking his vibrato was excessive, but my ear was a little green then.  I have only
recently come to understand the role his teaching would play in my life.
